Syma X5SW: Review

Syma has been very successful in the drone’s market in recent years, offering price-sensitive models such as the Syma X5SW, with convincing performance.

They are suitable for any age and allow anyone to learn to pilot these quadcopter with extreme ease. The Syma X5SW is perhaps one of the best low-cost drones that you can currently find on the market, since it can provide performance that you can hardly find on other models of the same range.

Design

The Syma X5SW externally is completely rigid white with a decent quality yet durable, while on the underside of the drone, there are four legs for a safe landing. This will prevent the drone from breaking during these maneuvers.

Around the blades are the caps for the propellers so as to further protect them from accidental bumps. It may happen that as you walk near a tree, the blades impinge on leaves or branches.

The dimensions are suitable for the interior of a home but also for the outside (12.4 x 12.4 x 4.1 inches), being completely plastic. Its  total weight is around 1.8 pounds. On the back of your drone, find the battery compartment and a small WiFi antenna for connection.

The remote is also fully plastic, using the usual 2.4GHz frequency, while a small bottom display gives you data on your drone while flying along with some connection info.

You can find it in two colors, black and white.

Technical Features

An important feature of this cheap drone is the ability to record, thanks to a fixed 2-megapixel camera capable of recording 720p video.

The estimated battery life is about 10 minutes, but if you use live streaming it may take less time, so it is advised to purchase several batteries separately to get a longer usage time. Charging the battery is pretty slow, and it is around 120 minutes.

Features

The Syma X5SW has a mode that few cheap drones have, namely FPV mode (live streaming on your smartphone or live view). To take advantage of this feature, just install your Syma FPV free app on your smartphone or tablet to see images transmitted by your drone in real time on your mobile device.

To use the app, just turn on your drone and look up the wi-fi network generated by the camera from your smartphone, then once you have connected to the network you only have to launch the application, and the game is done.

If you are on your first experience with a quad bike do not worry, on the radio control, there are two different flight modes, one for the most inexperienced and one already advanced, with a headless mode that helps you with the ” Drone head orientation on long distance.

Obviously, the mode of flight is free, and it will be harder to drive the drone, but you can have more and more fun. With experience and time, you will be able to do everything you want.

Behavior in flight

The Syma X5SW works very well in flight, responds well to the controls, easily piloted in both flight modes, gas  management is balanced, and height is manageable perfectly.

In the presence of wind, it is harder to use, being mostly made of plastic its weight is reduced (720g). If the strong wind is not recommended, it may come out of the range or risk an impact that might break it.

With a bit of practice with the supplied remote, you can also take some 360-degree tricks to make your flight fun and exciting. The maximum distance stated by the manufacturer is 100 meters, close to 80 meters, the controls will start to respond slightly late.

Image Quality

Image quality is decent, but the drone’s low price is more than satisfactory. The 2 Mpx video camera transmits video at 640×480 in live view. Recordings  are saved directly to your smartphone, as it does not have any microSD card slot.

The camera is fixed so there is no way to move or rotate it. The vibration reduction is not present, so it will be present during streaming.

When direct streaming is used, it is recommended that you stay within 50 meters, because after that distance the signal will start to lose and further spoil the quality of the video. The quality of the machine included in the package is not particularly good: the sensor has only 2 Mpx and the video is made up to 720 p.

The positive aspect, as we have already mentioned, is that thanks to the WiFi antenna, the camera allows ” first-person ” flight, but we must remember that shooting, and shooting cannot  be saved locally.
